I’ve been in Haiti for three days and I feel like my mind is only now starting to put together the pieces of what I’ve seen. The destruction brought about by the quake is massive. It hasn’t been overplayed on tv. Driving and walking through Haiti is sobering. Collapsed and condemend buildings wait for you every where. So many people seem so uncertain about how to even start the process of rebuilding their lives.
Yet, there is hope in this country. You see it in the small things. You see it in smiles coming back slowly. You see it in people making plans for the future and trying to get back to life as it was. And you see it in the faces of the children of Haiti. It’s the simple things that produce the most joy in Haiti. We gave a pair of shorts to a five year old boy yesterday. He didn’t have anything on at all before that. You should have seen him dance in his new shorts! The kid went crazy and so did we.
We came knowing we would only be able to make a small dent in the struggles Haiti and Percin face. I’m okay with that. I believe many more of you will come. But also believe the real hope of Haiti must come from the people of this nation. I pray they’ll do it. And I want to help then any way I can.
From Haiti,
John
