The Light To Come

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
- John 1: 1-5

Christmas is the story of eternal divinity stepping into finite humanity.

The magnificence of the eternally divine One we call Jesus is beyond our ability to imagine. There was never a time when He wasn’t; no matter how far back you go, He’s there. He’s Creator of all; of the world and everyone who’s ever walked it. Life flows from Him and no one else. He shines. We weren’t created to hear His story. We were created to be His story. He’s God.

And He came to the planet. Can you imagine? The One the angles worship walking around just like you and like me. It was an event so huge that it forever altered how the world marked time. Nothing would ever be the same again.

Yet, so much looks the same. The world still tastes darkness that defies explanation. Indifference, consumerism and ungrace hold so many in the pit of their own personal darkness. Fear, anger and uncertainty dominate. Hope can seem perpetually beyond our grasp. Tears come easily for way too many.

Maybe that’s why the story of God with us still stirs so much in our hearts today. Real hope, joy and peace don’t allude us. They chased us down. Jesus brought His light right into the middle of the whole mess. It’s still what He does today. Light reaching into the corners of darkness to grab the most unlikely.

Whatever corner of the planet you find yourself reading this from, rest in the comfort that Light has come. There is hope. There is joy. There is peace with God and with each other when we get it right. Our hearts should sing. We know up close the Light of the world. His name is Jesus. The One who changed history can surely change you.
